American Institute Daignostic Medical Sonography/Ultrasound USA

Y

American Institute’s family of schools includes the American Institute College of Health Professions and American Institute School of Health Careers located in Florida and the Fox Institute schools in Connecticut and New Jersey. With our online/residential training model, there are many options for attending our Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs, regardless of where you live.

American Institutes specialize in career-focused education. We understand how to meet the needs both of students and of employers. We design our programs, schedules and support services to do so, not only while you are in school but after graduation and beyond.

our Ultrasound Training may be closer than you think!

· Classes start frequently so that you can get started right away

· Theory classes are as close as your personal computer

· Focused lab classes require you to be on site just a few days per month

· Clinical training is held in a real-life setting close to where you work or live

With our unique approach to Ultrasound Education, you could combine your Bachelors Degree in any field or Associates Degree in a patient care Healthcare field with our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program and become a desirable candidate for positions in the field of Ultrasound. Our hybrid programs are designed especially for you and combine digital and internet technologies with hands-on training both in our lab and in a clinical facility near you.

Our programs are offered in Bachelor’s Degree and Diploma formats and focus on the two most in-demand application areas for sonography. You can choose between a General focus which includes both Abdominal and Obstetric and Gynecological applications, or a Cardiac focus which includes the Heart. Both provide exposure to Vascular Ultrasound, the third most common use of the technology.

There is little better than the feeling that comes from knowing that what you do for work actually makes a difference. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers know that feeling. Physicians recommend Ultrasounds as a diagnostic tool. Sonographers are specially trained to provide studies to physicians that enable them to diagnose health issues and treat them appropriately, or provide patients the comfort of knowing everything is ok. Whether it is the adult heart that is shown to be healthy, the improperly functioning heart valve that is caught in time, or the fetus whose sex is revealed to expectant parents, every study performed and every patient met is an achievement in helping others for the Sonographer.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography,Ultrasound Technician Training

What Diagnostic Medical Sonographers do:
A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (also called Ultrasound Technician/Technologist or Ultrasonographer) uses sonography, or ultrasonography equipment for the diagnosis of various medical conditions. Sonography and ultrasonography use sound waves to generate an image, which can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions through the body. Ultrasonography is commonly associated with obstetrics, where it is used to monitor growth of the fetus during pregnancy.

The main duties of a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer include:

- Directing high frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body
- Operating equipment, which collects reflected echoes
- Taking measurements, calculating values, and analyzing results
- Supplying relevant images to the physician for diagnosis

Diagnostic medical sonographers may specialize in:
- Obstetric and gynecologic sonography (the female reproductive system)
- Abdominal sonography (liver, kidneys, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas)
- Neurosonography (brain)
- Breast sonography
- Vascular sonography (blood vessels)
- Cardiac sonography (heart)

Qualifications & Education:
Although not mandatory, employers often look for sonographers who are trained in accredited programs. Sonographers can train in universities, hospitals and colleges. A background in science or healthcare is often required to gain entry into these programs. Sonography programs can last from two to four years in duration, and graduates can gain a Bachelor’s Degree or Associate Degree on successful completion of the course. The typical subjects covered on a Sonography Program include: physiology, instrumentation, anatomy, basic physics, medical ethics and patient care.

The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) provides certification and registration for Sonographers. Sonographers registered by the ARDMS are known as Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS). To become registered with the ARDMS, you need to pass an examination. Registration is available in the following specialities, Obstetric and Neurosonography, Gynecologic Sonography and Abdominal Sonography.

Salary & Job Prospects:
Salaries vary from $40,000 to $70,000 depending on experience, qualifications, position held and location. As sonography is fast becoming a popular alternative to radiologic procedures, the job outlook is excellent. Sonography does not involve radiation, so there are less harmful side effects and complications from repeated use. Most Sonographers work in Hospitals, but due to the increase in outpatient care, job growth will also occur to sonographers working in Physicians offices and diagnostic laboratories outside of hospitals.

Find an Allied Health School:
Use the red search box above, to find Allied Health schools and colleges in your area that offer sonographer/ultrasound technician training and education programs.

Ultrasound Technicians Schools

Make Ultrasound Tech Your Profession - Accredited
Becoming an ultrasound tech requires that students first obtain an associates or bachelors healthcare degree, before they are permitted to enter a clinical ultrasound program. So for students who do not already have a healthcare degree, getting that degree from an online school is an affordable and flexible choice.

Welcome to Ultrasound Technician Schools
Frequently Adked Questions Regarding Ultrasound Technician Degrees
  • What is an Ultrasound Technician?
  • What is Ultrasonography?
  • What Will I Learn in an Ultrasound Technician School?
  • What Kind of Training Do I Need to Become an Ultrasound Tech?
  • What Is the Job Outlook for an Ultrasound Tech?
  • Where Do Ultrasound Technicians Work?
What Types of Ultrasound Technician Degrees and Ultra Sound Tech Certifications Exist?
  • Certificate in Sonography/Ultrasound: At the diploma or certificate level, students are introduced to the field of ultrasound technology. They take courses in medical terminology and ultrasound physics and learn how to use ultrasound equipment. Some certificate programs prepare students to sit for national registry exams, which is often necessary to find a job or apply for an associate's degree program or bachelor's program.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Sonography/Ultrasound: Many entry-level jobs in ultrasound technology only require students to have an associate's degree. Programs will combine classroom instruction, lab work and clinical externships to adequately prepare students to work with sonography equipment and conduct examinations, learn how to work with a health care team, communicate using medical terminology, and understand how to apply concepts in a real-life setting. Some programs may allow students to choose a focus area, while other programs will cover all types of sonography, including obstetrics, abdominal sonography and vascular sonography. Students should also expect to fulfill a general education requirement as part of their curriculum.
  • Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Sonography/Ultrasound: A bachelor's degree in ultrasound technology or diagnostic sonography is not usually required for entry-level positions in the field, but it can be a great help to someone who is pursuing a management position or advanced study and expertise in the field. Bachelor's degree programs combine general academics with major courses, and students should also expect to complete internships and clinical requirements. At this level, students may be allowed to choose a specialty like obstetrics, abdominal sonography, vascular sonography, breast sonography and more.
What is the Average Salary of an Ultrasound Technician?
·         The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that diagnostic medical sonographers can expect to earn between $48,890 and $67,670 a year. The median annual earnings was reported at $57,160, and this amount does not change much for professionals who work in physicians offices versus those who work in hospitals and clinics. While an associate's degree is often the highest level of education required of an ultrasound technician, a bachelor's degree or even master's degree in the health sciences or management may make it easier for you to compete for promotions and earn a higher salary. The BLS reports that the highest 10% of diagnostic medical sonographers earned more than $77,520.
